AVINENT will continue its relationship with the Dental Hospital of the University of Barcelona for another year. The company is renewing the agreement as a supplier of dental implant systems to the Dental Hospital, managed by the Josep Finestres Foundation and located on the Bellvitge campus.
Training has been essential throughout AVINENT’s development and evolution. The company has participated in many congresses, while many scientific and academic alliances with cutting-edge research centers position it as a leader in creating and disseminating knowledge in the sector.
The relationship between AVINENT and the old Faculty of Dentistry and current Dentistry Training and Research Unit of the University of Barcelona began in 2008. Dr. Carles Subirà, who holds a PhD in Medicine and Surgery from the UB and is a professor of the Faculty of Dentistry at the same university, remembers it well: “What was then a small company that had just broken in to the dental sector entered our institution with a product in a classic format, but with some details that immediately drew our attention. That small group of engineers that was already starting to point the way showed us prosthetic solutions over implants that began to encourage us due to both their simplicity and their versatility,” recalls Dr. Subirà, who is also the co-director of the Master’s program in Integrated Adult Dentistry and post-graduate programs in Endodontics, Dentistry and Tooth Sculpting.
Later, the prestigious professor adds, the continuous R&D&I regarding the needs of dentistry professionals “enabled us to enjoy a locally made product with the highest quality standards to the point where we often feel like clinical co-creators.”
The first edition of the intensive workshop on Basic Implantology started in 2012. Since then, it has grown every year thanks to the different activities of support that AVINENT provides to different professionals working at the University of Barcelona’s Dental Hospital.
In 2017, in the sphere of training, AVINENT organized the sixth edition of the Basic Implantology workshop, in which a group of professionals could be trained in AVINENT’s digital system by great professionals from the University of Barcelona’s Dental Hospital. The course drew medical professionals from all over Spain and its content was divided into theory, the practice of dissection and fitting implants in the heads of corpses and finally, the practice of fitting implants in patients.
Professionalism, knowledge, commitment to research, the latest technology and pleasant personal treatment are the values that define the UB’s Dental Hospital and its relationship with AVINENT. As Dr. Subirà says, “cooperation between both institutions is currently constant. Research projects, training courses taking an AVINENT product as a model, shared know-how… are ongoing and rewarding activities. AVINENT’s commitment to dentistry through the digital flow marks a trend that our center doesn’t want to miss out on.”
Constant center of innovation
The University of Barcelona’s Dental Hospital is a monographic hospital dedicated to oral health that offers a wide range of services and is where students of the UB’s Faculty of Dentistry carry out their undergraduate, post-graduate and Master’s-level clinical practices under the guidance and supervision of the teaching staff of the University of Barcelona.
The only dental hospital in Catalonia, it adds to this core of knowledge with professors of great professional and academic prestige from the University of Barcelona, specialized nursing professionals, the most advanced technology and a wide range and variety of services that make it a leader in the dental sector.
In order to be able to make AVINENT’s constant innovation available to undergraduate, post-graduate and Master’s students, a team of company technicians show the professionals the new technologies that currently make up the paradigm of Dentistry 4.0 and the entire digital flow. Dr. Octavi Camps, the professor of the Master’s program in Oral Surgery and Buccofacial Implantology at the Dentistry Training and Research Unit, comments on the different benefits of this methodology: “Things like intraoral scanning, virtual planning and guided surgery enable us to improve dental care, making it more precise and easier to explain to the patient.” The prestigious academic stresses that “we are aware that just like any other medical science, the practice of dentistry must be based on evidence so that the treatment given to patients reflects the best scientific information possible. In the last two years, we have had the chance to get to know a team greatly predisposed to listen to ideas and foster the performance of high-quality scientific studies.”
Cutting-edge research
We must also highlight AVINENT’s relationship with the different surgery, prosthodontics and prosthetics departments to carry out pre-clinical, clinical and technical research projects that help to support their products scientifically through publications in influential indexed journals. On this point, AVINENT supports professionals involved in research and helps them to carry out different projects by providing its technical and scientific knowledge. At the same time, it also values and rewards work presented at congresses and that brings added value to dental research.
